Our story

We grew up here.

Angourie Point is one of Australia's most celebrated surf breaks — a fast, hollow right-hander that wraps around the headland into the Blue Pool. We've been running lessons here since before most of our students were born.

The Angourie Surf Co. was started by Terry and Mandy Nolan in 1978. Today their daughter Cassie runs the school with a small crew of locals who grew up in the water between Yamba beach and Spooky Beach. We know every sandbar, every current, and exactly where to position beginners to catch their first wave.

All instruction is SLSA and Surfing Australia accredited. Maximum 6 students per instructor in water. Wetsuits and softboards provided for all lesson types. We operate year-round — the Clarence Valley coast is pumping in every season.

Surf spots near Angourie Point

The Clarence Valley coastline serves up a surprisingly varied menu. Angourie Point is the headline act — a long, walling right-hander that works best at mid-to-high tide with a south-east groundswell. But if it's small, crowded or the wind's turned on, the alternatives are minutes away.

  • PointAngourie Point — best 1–1.5m SE groundswell, offshore NW wind, mid tide
  • BeachYamba Main Beach — beginner-friendly peaks, consistent year-round, great for first lessons
  • ReefSpooky Beach — sheltered cove south of the point, calm water, ideal for kids and board hire
  • BeachTurners Beach, Yamba — north-facing beachbreak, picks up northerly swells when the south is flat

"Took my two kids (7 and 10) for the grommet session. Tara was absolutely brilliant with them — patient, funny and clearly knows the ocean inside out. My youngest had never been in the surf before and was riding waves by the end of hour one. Could not recommend this more."

"Hired a mal for the day from Jake and surfed Spooky Beach for three hours. Board was in perfect condition, wax job sorted, fins tight. He threw in a few tips on reading the tide there and they were spot on. Great crew all round."

"We've been coming to Yamba for school holidays every year and this was the best thing we've added to the trip. The kids did three sessions over five days and now they're asking to move to Yamba permanently. Fair warning — this school is that good."

"Damo took me for a private session on a solid 1.2m day at Angourie and genuinely broke down my backhand turn in a way that finally clicked after years of frustration. I've done clinics in Bali, Noosa and Bondi — this was the best coaching I've had, full stop."

"Cassie did our lesson and she is the real deal. She watched us for about 20 minutes before we even got in the water, then tailored the entire session to our different skill levels. My partner had never surfed; I'd been a few times. We both got exactly what we needed."
